PROJECTS

1

Adult Literacy

The Haitian Adult Literacy Program is ABI's main thrust.  It is located in the mountain area of Kenscoff in Haiti, serving adults over age 17.

The program consists of Level 1 (alphabet, sounds, simple words, etc), Level 2 (grammar, sentence structure, etc) and Level 3 (comprehensive reading, writing, and simple math).

Students who successfully complete the first three levels to achieve graduate status, may enroll in Level 4 (composition, math).  Upon enrolling in Level 4, students participate in the Alumni Contribution Program which requires them to pay-it-forward by assisting under grad students with tutoring and work replacement to ensure greater success.

Building Projects

Current opportunities for growth demand expansion of our ministry to include an ABI School and Administration building.  We can no longer operate status quo.  The vision for our building on yet unpurchased land includes modest accomodations for classrooms, an office, , a School of Ministry, and a Skills for Life Center.

Expansion

Opportunities

ABI has recently opened a Literacy Program Annex that is 11/2 hours each way by foot through the mountains.  Our teachers are currently making this trip on foot.  We have an immediate need for a motorcycle, which would cut their commute down to 25 min each way and provide opportunities for further expansion of the program.

The area of Thomazeau is our next projected area of expansion for the Haitian Adult Literacy Program.  It is located three hours away from our original location in Kenscoff.  Pastor Castra is waiting for us to come to Thomazeau and implement the program as soon as funding  becomes available.

5

Skills for Life Center

Our vision for a much-needed School and Administration building includes plans for a Skills for Life Center that will provide instruction for practical skills to offer local residents a better means of support for themselves and their families.

3

Land Acquisition

Due to tremendous growth over the last year, the purchase of land has become essential for ABI to fulfill our vision.  Having outgrown our borrowed facility which currently houses our classrooms, the need for land upon which to build our own facility is eminent.  Please join us in prayer, as land in Haiti is scarce and costly.

6

Community Well

The need for clean and available water in Haiti is great.  In the mountain area of Kenscoff, there is no water source outside of a small stream down in the valley.  From our area of operation, it is a 30-minute trek down the mountain for water, and another 30-minute hike back up carrying water in 5-gallon containers.  During our most recent visit, we took a nurse who discovered many water-borne illnesses among the local population.  It is necessary to include a well on our proposed building site, not only for our primary use, but for the health and benefit of the community.
